How to Start a Blog Today: A Comprehensive Guide
Interested in starting a blog? Sharing your passions and connecting with people from around the world? Whatever your niche, there's a community out there. Starting a blog is a wonderful idea! I
If you have been wondering how to start a blog, today's the day, this post will walk through each step of starting a blog. Whenever you're ready, it's time to take the first step, and begin your blogging adventures!
Here's an overview of what we'll be covering:
Step 1: Select a topic & purpose
There are SO many topics out there that would make amazing blogs. You could decide to take on a broad category like DIY, finance, travel, or food, or select a specific niche like D&D or hot chocolate!
How do you decide what to write about?
I recommend starting with a topic that you are passionate about, whether you are an expert or are planning to learn all about the topic. Here are some questions to ask yourself in considering what you would like to blog about:
What do you enjoy talking about? Selecting a topic that you enjoy will make your blog more enjoyable and feel less like a chore. When you're passionate about the topic that you are writing about, this will shine through to your reader!
What blogs do you enjoy reading? What do you like about them? What might they be missing? Take a survey of existing blogs out there and see how you might be able to fill a gap that's missing, or build out content in a popular area.
What are you an expert in or would like to be an expert in? What things do you like learning about? What inspires you? You can talk about your journey to becoming an expert, lessons learned, write tutorials and how-to's, etc.
Still not sure what to write about? Here is a non-exhaustive list of ideas you might be able to pick from
Food
Health
Fitness
School
Community
Tiny Homes
Photography
Activities
Inspiration & Advice
Relationships
DIY & crafts
School
Personal Finance
Llamas
Outdoor Activities
Technology
Aliens
And many, many more options!
Once you have decided upon a topic, then you need to think about your purpose. Are you writing a blog about everything related to cats, or maybe you're a vet and want to focus on healthy care of cats & medical issues, or perhaps you want to take a humorous perspective of cat cartoons. Whatever your angle, narrow or broad, this will help direct your content and build your readers.
Step 2: Select a blog name & URL
Unfortunately, this is easier said than done!
Step 3 Pick your Blog Platform & Register your Domain Name
If you're looking to start an affordable and professional site, I recommend clicking here to start off with Bluehost. By getting your domain name directly through Bluehost, this makes the entire process very easy. I recommend the basic, discounted down to $3.95/month plan with my link to get started! You can always upgrade features later as needed later down the road and pay the different in cost then.
When selecting the features for your site, I recommend purchasing the Domain Privacy Protection, only $0.99/month, which means that your contact information is kept safe.
Here are the steps to creating your blog:
Go to Bluehost and click "Get Started Now"
Select the package you are interested in (I recommend basic!)
Enter your domain name that you either previously selected or sign up for a new domain name here.
Input your personal & payment info
Step 4: Connect your Domain & Hosting
Note: Skip this step if you bought your domain through Bluehost!
If you have previously registered your domain name elsewhere, you will need to add the domain you have to your host. This can be done as an add-on domain through your Bluehost web hosting. Select "Domains" and then "assign."
Step 5: Install WordPress on Bluehost
Next, we need to integrate our website building method. I recommend WordPress because it's free!
Once completing your password as prompted by Bluehost, the service will walk you through these next steps.
Bluehost will ask you to choose a theme, you can select this at random since it's easy to change later, then press continue.
Click on "Start Building"
You'll see on the next screen the options "Business", "Personal", or "I don't need help" to get going.
Congrats, you now have a blog!
